"A dystopia of pleasure rather than pain — and more unsettling for it."
In the World State, people are engineered in hatcheries, conditioned for their caste and kept content with sex and the drug soma. A 'savage' raised outside the system arrives to challenge it.
Huxley's satire of consumerism and comfort feels remarkably prescient. The characters are thin and some attitudes date the book, but its central question — what we give up for happiness — endures.
This assessment concerns the novel, not a particular recording. A natural companion to Orwell's 1984.
