"An immersive epic of ecology, religion, and power on a desert world."
Young Paul Atreides follows his family to Arrakis, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe. Betrayal drives him into the deep desert, where the Fremen see in him a long-prophesied leader.
Herbert's world-building is extraordinarily dense — politics, ecology, and mysticism interlock. The opening chapters can feel heavy with terminology, and the prose is more grand than graceful, but few science-fiction novels reward patience so richly.
Several English audio editions exist, including full-cast productions; this is an assessment of the novel. Essential for science-fiction listeners.
