"A marriage thriller that weaponizes its own unreliable narrators to brutal, memorable effect."
When Amy Dunne disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary, suspicion quickly falls on her husband Nick. Gillian Flynn alternates between Nick's present-tense account and Amy's diary entries, and the gap between those two versions of the marriage is where the novel does its sharpest work.
The book's mid-point swerve has become famous for good reason: it recasts everything that came before and forces a reassessment of both narrators' reliability. Flynn's prose is coolly precise, and her portrait of a marriage curdling under mutual resentment is often more unsettling than the thriller plot wrapped around it. Readers looking for a straightforward sympathetic protagonist won't find one here, which is very much by design.
The Audible edition uses dual narrators, Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne, for Amy and Nick respectively, running roughly 19 hours 10 minutes. This is an editorial assessment of the book, not a review of that narration. A strong choice for listeners who enjoy morally ambiguous leads and twisty domestic suspense.
