"Sparkling dialogue and a heroine who still feels thoroughly modern."
Elizabeth Bennet, quick-witted and quicker to judge, meets the proud and wealthy Mr Darcy, and both must unlearn their first impressions. Around them, Austen arranges a comedy of marriage, money, and reputation in Regency England.
The irony is the engine: Austen's narrator rarely states a judgement outright, letting conversation expose vanity and folly. Readers expecting sweeping passion may find the romance restrained, yet its slow reversal is deeply satisfying.
Numerous English audio editions are available; this assessment concerns the novel rather than any particular performance. A natural starting point for classic romance.
