"A coming-of-age story and a murder trial, told with a naturalist's eye for the marsh."
Kya Clark is abandoned first by her mother, then her siblings, and finally her father, and raises herself in the North Carolina marshland. The novel braids her gradual self-education in nature with the 1969 death of a local golden boy and the trial that follows.
Owens's background as a wildlife scientist shows to the book's benefit: the marsh is the novel's best-developed character, and the shell passages give the mystery an unusual texture. The plotting is more debatable — the townspeople stay sketchy, the romance arcs are conventional, and the courtroom resolution divides readers sharply.
Cassandra Campbell narrates the English audiobook, which runs 12 hours 12 minutes. This is an editorial assessment of the novel, not a review of that performance. Recommended for listeners who want atmosphere and character over procedural precision.
